MADISON UNIQUE NEVIN

Welcome!

Hi, I'm Madison.

I’m an MFA candidate in fiction at Syracuse University. I grew up in Bellevue, Washington and received my B.A. from the University of Washington, where I studied English Literature. I’m an alum of the Tin House Summer Workshop, and I previously worked at the New Yorker magazine as an Editorial Production Associate before leaving to focus on my writing. I’m currently at work on my speculative fiction novel Boundless Black.

My Writing Style

Forms

I primarily write fiction novels and short stories. However, I remain interested in screenwriting and writing for television, and I also enjoy occasionally rambling in blog posts and essays.

People

My stories tend to center Black voices and experiences. I'm deeply invested in creating characters who are not only diverse and unique but also authentic and relatable, and I strive to contribute to the already dynamic and captivating world of Black literature.

Genres

I write speculative fiction that often explores themes of race and identity while experimenting with elements of science fiction, horror, and magical realism. I am influenced by writers like Danielle Evans, Danzy Senna, Zadie Smith, Octavia E. Butler, James Baldwin, and screenwriter/director Jordan Peele, among many others.
